All you need to know about your investment

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CRAFT A PERSIAN RUG?

The amount of time it takes to craft a rug is determined by the size, design and knot count. A room sized piece can take from 9 months to 3 years to complete by 3 artisans depending on detail and quality.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE LIFESPAN?

If properly cared for and cleaned periodically a good quality rug will last for generations!

WHAT DETERMINES THE PRICE?

Costs are determined by factors such as age, color, size, design, condition, kpsi (knots per square inch), material (wool, silk, cotton) and how rare the piece is.

WHAT IS "KPSI?"

Knots per square inch (kpsi) means the number of knots in one square inch of a carpet. The more kpsi, the more detailed the design and the more expensive it will be. They can go from under 60 kpsi to over 1000 kpsi. However this does not mean that a piece with a lower kpsi is of lower quality than a rug with a higher kpsi. All rugs have their own characteristics and independent styles.

WHY IS THERE A DIFFERENT COLOR IN SOME AREAS?

It is a common occurrence specially in handcrafted rugs and is referred to as "abrash". Mostly it is caused by variation in the dye lots. It is encountered when rugs are handwoven in relatively primitive conditions where each dye lot may consist of only 20 or 30 gallons, as opposed to commercially dyed mixed in cities that may consist of 500 or 1000 gallons. There can be large differences in the kind and the natural color of wool used in one rug, and each wool absorbs dye a little differently. Also, when wool is spun by the artisans hand, the tension of the spin varies and consequently so does the capacity of the wool to absorb dye.

WHY ARE MOST RUGS MADE WITH WOOL?

Simply because of its beauty and durability and the fact that wool is more resistant to foot traffic than any other fiber. It hides dry dirt naturally and is not affected by it for some time. It is also a great insulator. Be careful that there are different qualities of wool and the cheaper ones will stain easily where there are children and pets in the household.

WHAT IS THE USE OF THE FRINGE?

It is for both function and fashion. It is a continuation of the foundation of the rug (warp threads). This is what keeps the ends of the carpet from unraveling.

WILL MY RUG STAIN OR FADE?

All pieces are subject to fading from sun exposure. Those woven with vegetable dyed wool will be more lenient where exposure is concerned than those woven with synthetic dyes.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY RUG CLEANED? WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I STAIN IT BY ACCIDENT?

Please see the General Care section in Guide.
